Holi (referred to as Phagwa in Bhojpuri), also called the Festival of Colours, is a popular Hindu spring festival observed in India, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad, the UK and Nepal. In West Bengal, it is known as Dolyatra (Doljatra) or Boshonto Utsav ("spring festival").
There are many hindu Mythological legends that explain as to why holi is celebrated.
One important reason is that holi is celebrated at a time when the chilly winter winds have withdrawn and with the onset of spring bright colourful flowers blossom in the trees and fill the air with their charismatic aroma.The crops have been cut and the farmers celebrate the harvest with each other in their community.
'Holi' falls on the full moon, in the month of Phalgun, which spans the end of February and the beginning of March on the Gregorian calendar. A time when spring is in the air.
